MCSO investigating after dispute, shooting at packed Rigdon Park
Chaos unfolded Saturday afternoon at Rigdon Park where a youth football game was taking place.
Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman confirmed his deputies, along with Columbus Police Department, responded to shots fired at Rigdon Park.
A dispute from one area ended up in Rigdon Park, leaving one person shot, Countryman said. That person was transported by EMS to the hospital. One person was also arrested for striking an EMS worker.
“The crime is being processed by the MCSO crime scene investigators and the shooter was taken into custody by the MCSO,” he added.
The South Columbus Raiders Youth Football & Cheer Inc League President, Robynn Purnell made a statement on social media:
As you may have seen or heard, there was a shooting at Rigdon Park this afternoon. The situation was due to adults from the visting team bringing outside drama to the park which led to a fight and then a shooting. Contrary to what you may see posted on social media or hear being said, THIS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH SOUTH COLUMBUS RAIDERS and didn’t involve anyone within our organization whatsoever!! Although I’m not sure what we could’ve done to prevent this incident we will look at ways to ensure safety at the games and apologize to all of the innocent children and spectators who had to witness such an unfortunate situation.
The MCSO Special Operations Bureau is working the investigation.
