Fatal crash in Eufaula following high-speed pursuit
A high-speed pursuit early Friday morning ended when a vehicle crashed, resulting in the death of the driver.
At approximately 4:19 AM, Eufaula Police Department (EPD) attempted to stop a vehicle driving recklessly at a high rate of speed on South Eufaula Avenue. The driver was heading southbound when the vehicle suddenly changed direction near the Rest Area and began traveling north on South Eufaula Avenue. The Barbour County Sheriff’s Office took over the pursuit as the vehicle continued to speed through the city.
The driver, later identified as Lamar T. Jenkins, 44, of Eufaula, was estimated to be traveling at speeds of 70 miles per hour when he lost control of the vehicle near Wal-Mart. “Jenkins swerved into a light pole, causing the car to crash and eject him from the vehicle,” authorities said.
Emergency medical services arrived at the scene and pronounced Jenkins dead shortly after the crash. Alabama State Patrol is currently conducting the investigation into the incident.
Authorities have not yet released additional details, and the investigation is ongoing.
