Fort Moore renamed to Fort Benning, Department of Defense confirms
CNAW2News.com has confirmed breaking news Monday after the Secretary of Defense of the United States of America, Pete Hegseth, has announced the renaming of Fort Moore.
In a press release from the Department of Defense, it confirms Secretary Hegseth signed a memorandum renaming Fort Moore in Georgia to Fort Benning.
“The new name pays tribute to Corporal (CPL) Fred G. Benning, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary heroism in action during World War I with the U.S. Army in France in 1918,” the press release said. “This change underscores the installation’s storied history of service to the United States of America, honors the warfighter ethos, and recognizes the heroes who have trained at the installation for decades and will continue to train on its storied ranges.”
Back in 2022, Fort Benning was renamed Fort Moore, and nearly 5 million dollars were spent on the construction and renovation, according to the Association of Defense Communities, who credited Stars and Stripes.
The renaming of Fort Benning, and other bases came after a Congress-created commission during the Biden administration in 2022 recommended changing the names of bases and other monuments honoring Confederate soldiers who had waged the Civil War against the United States. Fort Benning was renamed Fort Moore in 2022 in honor of Lieutenant General Harold “Hal” Moore and his wife, Julia Moore.
The fort’s name is now being reverted to the original name by the Trump administration in honor of Corporal (CPL) Fred G. Benning, as previously stated earlier in the article.
This remains a developing story.
