Trooper-involved shooting, pursuit leaves suspect in custody
Special Agents assigned to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) have launched an investigation into an officer- involved shooting involving a Trooper assigned to ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:16 a.m., on Friday, March 14, when an individual, later identified as Richard D. Dean, 35, of Deatsville, attempted to illegally pass through a construction zone in the southbound lane on Interstate 85 near Exit 16 in Montgomery County.
An ALEA Trooper assigned to work traffic control in the construction zone attempted to stop Dean, however, Dean attempted to elude the Trooper. Subsequently, the vehicle crossed over into the northbound lane of I-85 and struck another vehicle. Following the crash, Dean exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
During the course of the incident, the ALEA Trooper discharged his firearm, however, Dean was not struck by gunfire. Dean was checked by medical personnel on scene and the Trooper was transported to Baptist Medical Center East for evaluation. Dean was arrested and charged with Felony Attempting to Elude. Dean was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Center with a $30,000 bond.
All southbound and northbound lanes of I-85 were closed while law enforcement processed the scene. All lanes have since reopened. Nothing further is available as the investigation remains ongoing.
