CCSD: Handgun found in backpack on W.F. Burns Middle School campus
The Chambers County School District has confirmed a handgun was discovered on one of its campuses today.
During the morning hours of the school day, the gun was discovered inside of a backpack on the campus of W.F. Burns Middle School. Authorities say it has been determined as an isolated situation and was handled safely by school administrators and resource officers.
“At no time were students or staff in immediate danger,” the district said. “The firearm was immediately secured, and the appropriate law enforcement protocols were followed.”
An investigation is currently underway, and the district stated they are cooperating fully with local authorities to determine how the weapon was brought onto campus.
Authorities have confirmed there are no further threats related to this incident and additional safety measures and support will be in place as needed in the coming days.
“We encourage parents to speak with their children about the importance of school safety and reporting anything suspicious to a trusted adult,” the district added.
The investigation remains ongoing.
