At approximately 10:13 p.m. on April 10th, the LaGrange Fire Department was dispatched to the scene after reports of a house fire. Engine 4 was the first to arrive, finding flames shooting from the roof of a two-story split-level residence. Firefighters quickly confirmed that the sole occupant had safely exited the home.
Crews launched an aggressive interior attack but encountered significant challenges due to a complex attic layout featuring multiple compartments. Such construction can trap heat and smoke, allowing the fire to spread undetected and complicating suppression efforts.
Additional units, including personnel from the Troup County Fire Department, were assigned to critical support roles, including defensive operations, Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) duties, and the salvage of valuables from the home’s lower level.
The fire was brought under control by approximately 11:09 p.m., though crews remained on-site overnight to monitor and extinguish residual hot spots. Despite their efforts, the home—valued at an estimated $278,000—was declared a total loss.
One firefighter sustained an injury during the operation and was transported to a local medical center. Officials have confirmed that the firefighter has since been treated and released.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. However, preliminary findings suggest that lightning, part of a broader storm system that passed through the area that night, may have contributed to the ignition. Firefighters also battled heavy lightning throughout the incident, which further complicated containment efforts.
Troup County fire investigators are continuing to examine the scene. No civilian injuries were reported.
