Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown receives Level III Neonatal Care Facility designation
Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown has been officially designated a Level III Neonatal Care Facility by the Georgia Department of Public Health, in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. This recognition reflects the hospital’s advanced capabilities in caring for medically fragile and at-risk newborns.

The prestigious designation follows an extensive on-site review of the hospital’s Miracle Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where approximately 550 infants from a 21-county region receive specialized care each year. The assessment evaluated the hospital’s technology, resources, and policies to ensure they meet stringent national standards.
“Our caring, compassionate staff have provided high-quality, personalized care to women and their babies for many years,” said Jonetta Chestnut, Director of Women and Children’s Services. “This prestigious designation should add to the confidence of parents that we’ll meet their baby’s needs.”
Chief Nursing Officer Cary Burcham highlighted the importance of the designation process. “The Neonatal Levels of Care Verification program provides an objective assessment of a facility’s expertise, equipment and resources to meet patient needs at different risk levels,” she said. “This program will help Piedmont Columbus Regional strengthen care for babies in our community.”
In addition to its NICU, the hospital operates a specialized Neonatal Transport Team comprised of skilled nurses and a registered respiratory therapist. This team ensures the safe and efficient transfer of newborns to the NICU using advanced ambulances designed for neonatal care.
Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown also offers comprehensive women and children’s services, including a 24/7 Obstetrical Emergency Department, obstetrics and gynecology hospitalists, midwifery care, a Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinic, and pediatric care at the Bill and Olivia Amos Children’s Hospital.
This Level III designation affirms the hospital’s role as a regional leader in neonatal care and a vital resource for families across west Georgia, and nearby east Alabama.
