Suspect dead after killing man, injuring female in Commerce Drive shooting in Auburn

Two people are dead, including the suspect and a female is injured after shooting on Commerce Drive in Auburn

Auburn Public Safety officials responded to the initial shooting call at a residence around 7:45 PM Monday night where they found two gunshot victims – a 28-year-old female and a 35-year-old male – which both had life saving measures done on them by first responders.

The female was transported to a nearby trauma center for additional medical treatment, where she is in unknown condition. The male succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene by emergency medical personnel. Lee County Chief Deputy Coroner Gene Manning confirms the 35-year-old male was identified as Lucas Spinks Jr.

During a search for the suspect wearing all black, who entered the home firing a gun, another male was found dead from a gunshot wound.

While processing the crime scene, responding officers collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.  “Preliminary findings indicate that the second deceased male, previously described as wearing all dark clothing, shot a gun inside a residence that resulted in the death of the male victim and injuries to the female victim,” police said.

Auburn Police also located two other people near the scene who reportedly exchanged gunfire with the suspect after the male and female victims were shot. The suspect was fatally shot during the exchange.

The identity of the suspect, who is from Phenix City, was released as 31-year-old Markevious Donta Yancie, according to Lee County Chief Deputy Coroner Gene Manning.

The incidents are being investigated as homicides by the Auburn Police Department and it is not believed to be a random shooting.

“Upon review by the Auburn Police Department and the Lee County District Attorney’s Office, criminal charges are currently precluded due to the death of the offender; however, this case remains under investigation,” authorities added.
