A late-night senior event at Eufaula High School turned chaotic Monday night when an officer-involved shooting occurred just outside the school, sparking alarm among students, parents, and community members.
Eufaula Police Chief Danny Christ confirmed that the shooting took place at approximately 9:35 p.m. on Monday, May 12, involving three adult males. While police have not released the identities of those involved, witnesses and family members say the individuals were seniors at the high school celebrating the end of the school year.
No one was injured by the gunfire. However, one of the males was transported to Medical Center Barbour as a precaution due to a pre-existing heart condition, authorities said.
According to Chief Christ, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which has now been turned over to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigations.
Community members are demanding answers. Social media has been flooded with accounts from those who were present, including a statement from KayKay Smith, who says her brother was in the car that was fired upon.
“My brother, along with several others, were at the high school. The police came and blocked my brother in and shot at the vehicle. They have no explanation as to why the bullet went through the car down by the gas pedal. These kids don’t own firearms or anything. It’s three people in that car. The point is, why would you shoot at these kids with no reason if they weren’t running, or you saw a firearm?” Smith posted online.
Police have not commented on what prompted the officer to fire at the vehicle.
The incident has left many in the community shaken, especially as it took place during what was supposed to be a joyful senior celebration.
CNAW2News has reached out to Eufaula City Schools for comment and is awaiting a response.
