Texas man killed in I-85 road rage shooting; LaGrange man charged with murder

A Texas man is dead and a Georgia man is in custody following a suspected road rage shooting on Interstate 85 that unfolded Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a vehicle accident near the 11-mile marker on I-85 at approximately 4:02 p.m. on July 30, 2025. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a vehicle in the median with its driver, later identified as 64-year-old Richard Hawk of Texas, unresponsive and bleeding.

Emergency personnel removed Hawk from the vehicle and transported him to a nearby ambulance. Medics soon discovered that he had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Hawk was rushed to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The Troup County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division was immediately called to the scene.

According to investigators, a witness reported seeing aggressive driving and possible road rage between two vehicles moments before the incident. The witness contacted West Point Police Department dispatch and provided a description and license plate number of one of the involved vehicles.

Officers with the West Point Police Department later located the suspect vehicle within city limits. Troup County investigators responded to the location and detained the driver, identified as Nytorian Allen, 23, of LaGrange.

Allen was transported to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office and has been charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of or Attempt to Commit Certain Crimes.
