A heavy Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office presence is underway in south Columbus.

The presence is taking place on South Lumpkin Rd near the Oxbow Meadows.

Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman confirms his sheriff’s deputies had a Corvette fled from them at 100 mph.

Sheriff Countryman says while the chase was called off, the driver of the Corvette turned off his headlights and continued toward on South Lumpkin Rd to enter the base.

“The driver hit the curb at the roundabout, landing into the woodland where it caught fire,” Countryman said.

The driver and the passenger fled on foot, but were both apprehended by deputies at the scene.

Columbus Fire and EMS Fire extinguished the fire.
