Auburn student among those killed in North Carolina plane crash involving NASCAR driver

CNAW2News.com has learned that an Auburn student was among those killed in a North Carolina plane crash that also claimed the lives of a NASCAR driver, his family, a NASCAR motorhome driver, and the pilot.

The plane crash occurred around 10:15 a.m. Thursday, December 18, 2025, at Statesville Regional Airport, located in Statesville, North Carolina. The plane, a Cessna 550 business jet, crashed on return to landing following a departure from the airport.

Those killed in the crash include NASCAR driver and humanitarian Greg Biffle; his wife, Cristina Biffle; their 14-year-old daughter, Emma; and their 5-year-old son, Ryder.

Three additional victims were identified as Craig Wadsworth, a NASCAR motorhome driver; Dennis Dutton, an airline transport pilot; and his son, Jack Dutton, a student at Auburn University. Jack Dutton was enrolled in Auburn’s School of Aviation and had earned his Instrument Rated Private Pilot ASEL certification just three weeks ago.

“We are devastated by the loss of our loved ones. This tragedy has left all of our families heartbroken beyond words,” a joint-family statement said. “Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives.”

Biffle and his wife were devoted parents and active philanthropists whose lives were centered around their young, according to the statement. Biffle, who was named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers, was also known for his humanitarian efforts, including delivering supplies and assisting stranded residents during Hurricane Helene.

The statement described Emma as a kind and loving individual who was cherished by many, while Ryder was remembered as an active, curious, and joyful child.

Craig Wadsworth was described as beloved member of the NASCAR community who will be missed by those who knew him.

“Dennis Dutton and his son Jack were deeply loved as well, and their loss is felt by all who knew them,” the statement said. Jack’s friend posted to social media after the crash saying “Jack you meant so much to me and so many people, more than you’ll ever know.”

According to Biffle’s friend, Garrett Mitchell, who is known as Cleetus McFarland, said they were on the way to see him when the crash occurred.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the deadly crash, using 16 team members who have experience in systems, recorders, power planes, drones, and family assistance. The investigation is being supported by specialist in operations, air traffic control, and meteorology.

A press conference is scheduled for an unknown time today, where further details could be released. Our thoughts and prayers remain with all those impacted by this tragedy.
