Columbus police have made an arrest following a deadly shooting at a gas station.

The shooting broke out in the parking lot of the Liberty gas station around 11:50 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026. The victim, 37-year-old Calvin Mitchell, was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional, but later died.

Following an investigation by the Columbus Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit, the suspect, 50-year-old Dwayne Quarles was taken into custody by the unit’s investigators and the SWAT team.

Quarles is charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
