Authorities are investigating the death of a 2-year-old child after emergency crews were called to a residence in the Cusseta area Friday morning.
According to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Lanett EMS were dispatched to a home on County Road 187 at approximately 9:00 a.m. on June 12 in reference to a 2-year-old female child who was not breathing.
Upon arrival, deputies immediately began rendering first aid until paramedics and officials with Huguley Fire Department arrived on scene. The child was then transported by Lanett EMS to East Alabama Medical Center Lanier, where she was later pronounced deceased.
Officials said the child’s body will be transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
The case remains under investigation by the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, the Fifth Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, and the Chambers County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities have not released the child’s identity. Officials said the name of the child will be released at a later time.
