The Columbus Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting at a local motel Wednesday evening.

According to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan, the victim has been identified as Jonathan Tennie, 35. Bryan said Tennie was shot by another person at the Motel 6 in the 3000 block of Victory Drive.

Police activity at the motel was first reported around 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Tennie was transported from the scene by Community Ambulance to Piedmont Columbus Regional, where he later died from his injuries, according to the coroner.

Bryan said the victim’s next of kin has been notified.

The suspect is in custody, and authorities say there is no threat to the public related to the shooting.

CNAW2News crews observed crime scene investigators working at the motel Wednesday evening. At least 11 evidence markers were visible at the scene, while investigators were also examining a gray SUV.

The Columbus Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. The circumstances surrounding the shooting and what led up to the deadly encounter remain under investigation.

The Motel 6 on Victory Drive has been the location of several serious incidents in recent years.

On February 18, 2023, four members of the same family were shot at the motel, with three of the victims killed. On July 6, 2023, another person was shot and killed at the property. A person was injured by gunfire on November 4, 2023, and a death investigation involving a deceased woman was conducted at the motel on October 31, 2023.

More recently, a fire was reported at the motel on August 22, 2026. No injuries were reported in that incident.
