Two Alabamians have died following Hurricane Isaias, Gov. Kay Ivey announced Saturday morning as crews across the state continue working to clear storm debris and restore power.
In a statement posted to her official website, Ivey said the storm brought heavy winds throughout Alabama, downing trees, knocking out power and causing damage across the state.
“I am praying for their loved ones this morning,” Ivey said, referring to the two people who lost their lives.
The governor said she had connected with Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Cameron Hamilton and Alabama Emergency Management Agency Director Jeff Smitherman as crews remained positioned around the state to assist with recovery efforts.
Ivey thanked the crews working to clear debris and restore electricity, noting that those efforts remain a priority as communities recover from the storm.
The governor also announced that she had rescinded the supplemental state of emergency proclamation requiring the mandatory evacuation of non-residents.
As of Saturday morning, all major roadways, including the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), had reopened, according to Ivey. However, some roads remain closed because of downed power lines, and utility crews are continuing to work to clear those hazards.
Residents should remain cautious in storm-affected areas, avoid downed power lines and follow guidance from local emergency management officials as recovery operations continue.
The circumstances surrounding the two deaths were not detailed in the governor’s statement.
