A shooting in the area of Pruitt Street near Howard Road Sunday night has prompted Macon County Schools to cancel classes Monday, September 14, 2026.

Tuskegee Mayor Chris Lee said he has been briefed on the shooting and confirmed that the Tuskegee Police Department is actively investigating the incident.

“I have been briefed on the tragic shooting that occurred this evening in the area of Pruitt Street near Howard Road,” Lee said. “TPD is actively investigating this incident.”

The mayor also confirmed he was aware of the decision by the Macon County School System to cancel school Monday in response to the shooting.

Macon County Schools Superintendent Dr. Melissa T. Williams-Myrick previously notified parents and guardians of the cancellation after speaking with the sheriff and chief of police regarding the incident, which the district said involved students.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” Williams-Myrick said.

Lee described Sunday night as a “heartbreaking night” for the Tuskegee community and asked residents to keep the affected families and the entire city in their prayers.

“The investigation is still active and ongoing,” Lee said. “Additional information will be released by TPD as it becomes available.”

As of publication, Tuskegee Police have not released additional details regarding the shooting, including the number of people injured or the circumstances that led to the incident.
