CNAW Newsroom —
19-year-old dies over 24 hours after shooting on Eddy Dr. in Columbus

A Columbus teenager who has been on life support for over 24 hours in the intensive care unit has passed away, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan announced Tuesday evening.

The 19-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to their head during a drive-by shooting on Eddy Drive near the neighborhood of Benning Hills in the southside of Columbus on Monday, August 15, 2022 around 2 A.M.

The teen was placed on life support Monday morning and was taken off of the medical apparatus in the afternoon hours of Tuesday, August 16, 2022. Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan reported that 19-year-old Keith Johnson was pronounced dead by an intensive care unit physician at Piedmont Columbus Regional hospital at 2:31 P.M. Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Dustin Harrelson was summoned to the hospital to work on the death report for the coroner’s office.

LifeLink, which is a organ and tissue donation company, is involved, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan said. Johnson will be going for an autopsy.

This is the sixth homicide for August and the twenty-seventh this year in Columbus. All but one of the August homicide cases are below the age of 20.
