ALDOT announces upcoming traffic pattern changes at US-280 and US-80 in Phenix City

CNAW Newsroom —
ALDOT announces upcoming traffic pattern changes at US-280 and US-80 in Phenix City
Key takeaways
  • ALDOT will allow right turns on red at US-280 and US-80 in Phenix City starting week of September 7.
  • Crews will construct a receiving lane for left-turn traffic to improve safety and reduce congestion at intersection.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is preparing to implement an updated traffic pattern at the intersection of US-280 and US-80 in Phenix City as part of an effort to improve safety and reduce congestion.

Following recent modifications to the intersection, ALDOT evaluated traffic conditions and gathered feedback from the public and local officials. In response to initial safety concerns, maintenance crews adjusted the signal controlling traffic from US-280 West onto US-80 East, also known as JR Allen Parkway, to prohibit right turns on red.

To help alleviate congestion, ALDOT now plans to return that right-turn movement to a free-flow condition.

To accommodate the change, crews will construct a short receiving lane for the inside dual left-turn lane from US-280 onto the US-80 ramp. This will allow drivers making the left turn to enter the receiving lane before merging to the right.

The contractor is expected to begin paving, striping, installing signage and making signal adjustments during the week of September 7, following the Labor Day holiday.

Drivers should watch for electronic message boards and follow ALDOT Southeast Region social media channels for updates as the new traffic pattern is implemented.

ALDOT thanked the public for providing feedback and asked motorists to remain patient while crews work to improve the safety and efficiency of the intersection.

Drivers traveling through the work zone are reminded to slow down, avoid distractions and remain alert for workers and equipment.
