An Auburn man has died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash that occurred in Tallapoosa County late last month.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the crash happened at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, on U.S. Highway 280 near the 93-mile marker, about two miles southeast of Camp Hill.

Investigators say 82-year-old Hugh W. Smith of Auburn was driving a 1996 Toyota Tacoma when it was struck by a 2009 Lexus IS250 driven by a 23-year-old man from Alexander City. Following the initial collision, the Toyota left the roadway and struck a tree.

Smith suffered critical injuries and was initially transported to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika before being transferred to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery. ALEA says Smith succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, July 14, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver of the Lexus was injured and transported to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment.

A passenger in the Toyota, Wanda A. Smith, 79, of Auburn, was also injured and transported to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment.

Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate the crash.
