Body of fallen officer escorted back to Columbus from Atlanta

CNAW Newsroom —
Body of fallen officer escorted back to Columbus from Atlanta

A somber day in the city of Columbus as officers from agencies across west Georgia lined up at the entrance of a local funeral home as the body of their friend and co-worker was escorted back to the city from Atlanta.

Officer John Marr, a 7-year veteran with the city’s police department, was found deceased on March 8, 2023. Marr was assigned to the Patrol Unit of the department.

“He exemplified excellence – displaying several qualities of a good Police Officer and public servant,” the department said in a social media post. “The days ahead will be long and oftentimes rough.”

Today, Officer Marr’s body was transported back from Atlanta to McMullen Funeral Home with an escort by the department’s Motor Squad and Georgia State Patrol. Top Columbus officials including Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan, Columbus Police Chief Freddie Blackmon, Assistant Chief of Police Joyce Dentz Fitzpatrick and Debra Kennedy were in attendance, as well as the family of Marr.

Mayor Skip Henderson, the mayor and head of public safety, was not in attendance.

“Until we meet again, Ofc. Marr, we have it from here,” the department added.

CNAW2NEWS continues to send our sincere condolences, as well as thoughts and prayers to the Columbus Police Department, as well as the family and friends of Officer John Marr.
