Brother shoots 6-year-old sibling in Lanett after gaining control of unsecured firearm; mother arrested

An investigation is underway after an accidental shooting left a 6-year-old with serious injuries.

The Lanett Police Department and Lanett Fire and EMS were dispatched to the New Jackson Heights Community of Lanett in reference to a 6 year old child who had sustained a gunshot wound on March 23, 2023, at approximately 9:40 PM.

Upon the scene being secured by the police department the child was transported from the scene by Lanett EMS, before being airlifted to a trauma center.

“Investigation by the Lanett Police Department revealed that the child’s adolescent brother had gained control of an unsecured firearm in the residence and discharged it resulting in his brother sustaining a serious gunshot wound to the abdomen,” police said.

The children’s mother was taken into custody for reckless endangerment. “No further information pertaining to the child’s condition can be released, the identities of the children and mother are being withheld from this press release out of consideration for the children involved,” the agency added.
