Capital murder suspect, Bradley Stokes, dead by suicide in Russell County Jail, coroner confirms

CNAW Newsroom —
Capital murder suspect, Bradley Stokes, dead by suicide in Russell County Jail, coroner confirms

A Russell County capital murder suspect has died by suicide early Sunday morning, coroner officials say.

The capital murder suspect is identified as Bradley Stokes. Stokes was arrested in the stabbing and killing of Treasure Hennessey that happened at a Fort Mitchell fire station, which was being used as a domestic violence shelter for Treasure, on September 2, 2023. Stokes was arrested in Muscogee County, and was later extradited back over to Russell County.

Stokes was found unresponsive by corrections officers at 1:40 A.M. Officers summoned an ambulance and attempted life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful.

Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr says Stokes was pronounced dead at 1:56 A.M. on September 17, 2023.

Lee County Sheriffs Office Investigators are working the case which is normal procedure.

His body is being sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy.

This is a developing story.

CNAW NOTE: We usually do not cover suicides, unless it is connected to a crime, occurs in a public place, or if it’s an elected official, popular subject, etc. Due to this subject being arrested on a capital murder charge, and it occurring at a local jail, we have decided to release this information to the public. If you or a loved one are in need of help, call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 9-8-8.
