Child passes away in Troup County crash; mother charged

Georgia State Patrol is investigating a horrific crash which left five children wounded, one who has now passed away.

The single vehicle crash occurred on July 27, 2024, around 10 P.M., in the 4700 block of New Franklin Road. According to Troup County fire scanner traffic, five pediatric patients were transported from the scene to nearby hospitals.

Troup County Coroner Erin Hackley confirmed one of the children, a 9-year-old male from Carrollton, Georgia, passed away from critical injuries.

While exact details have not been released at this time, according to multiple sources and jail records, Malinda Michelle Armstrong was arrested and charged on July 29, 2024, with homicide by vehicle, driving too fast for conditions, serious injury by vehicle, failure to maintain lane, failure to use safety belts in passenger vehicle, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Jail records confirm Armstrong is non-bondable.
