Church administration have issued a statement following a massive blaze Wednesday night.

On Wednesday night, a massive fire destroyed the already-damaged structure of the former 24th Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, GA. The blaze began around 9:00 p.m. near Veterans Parkway, sending thick smoke and flames into the air. Due to the building’s compromised structure from a previous fire in November 2024, fire crews used a defensive strategy and did not enter the building initially.

Emergency responders deployed multiple fire engines, ambulances, a hazmat unit, and police support, closing all lanes near the scene. One individual was later rescued from inside the building and taken to the hospital; their condition remains unknown. Witnesses reported seeing others flee the building, but no official confirmation has been given.

In response to the incident, church administration released a formal statement Thursday morning. Pamela Dixon, on behalf of 24th Street Church, confirmed the fire and expressed deep sadness over the continued vandalism and safety threats posed by the vacant property.

“We are saddened to confirm that a fire occurred at our former church location for the second time,” Dixon stated. “While this building once served as our place of worship and community, it has not been in use since our congregation relocated to a new facility. The property is currently for sale.”

She went on to state that the structure has faced repeated acts of vandalism and unauthorized occupation since it was vacated. Despite attempts to secure the premises, individuals have entered illegally and, in some cases, taken up residence.

“These incidents have raised ongoing concerns for public safety and property damage,” the statement continued. “We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding this most recent fire. Our hope is that this situation brings renewed attention to the challenges vacant properties can face and the importance of community vigilance.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the structure is considered a total loss. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Columbus Fire and EMS.
