Columbus Animal Care and Control quarantined due to canine distemper exposure

CNAW Newsroom —
Columbus Animal Care and Control quarantined due to canine distemper exposure

Columbus Animal Care and Control (CACC) was recently exposed to canine distemper in the shelter.

Under the direction of the Department of Agriculture, the facility has been placed under quarantine until September 24, 2024, according to the city of Columbus.

The following steps are being taken to limit the spread of the virus:

All intake of stray or surrendered animals has been halted

All dog adoptions have been halted

The main runs of the facility is closed to the public until September 24, 2024

All off-site adoptions events have been halted

Deep cleaning protocols are in place

All dogs are being monitored and any showing possible symptoms are being tested

Canine distemper is a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous system of dogs, ferrets, and some wildlife species such as raccoons and skunks. The virus can be fatal and is primarily transmitted through the airborne exposure such as sneezing, coughing or barking. It is also spread through shared food, water bowls and other items. Symptoms include pus discharge from the eyes and nose, fever, coughing and vomiting.

“Until further notice, stray dogs cannot be accepted at the shelter. If you find a stray, consider fostering it temporarily or trying to find it’s owner through social networks like Facebook, Next Door, and the Animal Control Lost & Found Mapping Tool,” the city said. “Columbus Animal Care & Control would like to remind pet owners to have their animals vaccinated or re- vaccinated as required by their veterinarian professional. We also encourage everyone to have their animal(s) microchipped. A tiny microchip, placed under the skin of a pet, gives that pet their own unique code that can be scanned and matched to the owners’ contact details. If your animal(s) is/are microchipped, please remember to update your address in the microchip company registry if you move. If your animal(s) is/are not microchipped, please speak with your veterinarian, or reach out to Columbus Animal Care and Control at 706.225.4512 for details of how you can get your animal(s) microchipped.”
