A criminal investigation is underway into the financial department of the city of Columbus, GA.

The investigation was initiated by Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office earlier this year after it was discovered millions of dollars were missing, CNAW2News.com has confirmed.

In the latest development into the investigation, a widely shared letter coming from Columbus DA was seen on numerous social media sites. CNAW2News.com understands WRBL.com was the first to report on the letter.

According to the letter, which was sent from District Attorney W. Donald Kelly to PACGA officials, it states, Kelly was contacted by Muscogee County Sheriffs Office regarding an investigation involving possible criminal acts of certain Columbus Consolidated Government employees.

“Three of the employees are the Finance Director, the Human Resources Director, and a Deputy City Manager. I do not feel comfortable handling this case because these three individuals make decisions about employment and budget issues for my office,” the letter adds. “My office needs to recuse. The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office will need a conflict prosecutor to consult with in this matter as soon as possible.”

CNAW2News.com remains investigating several tips and will continue to update our article as we get it. This remains a developing story.
