Columbus police chief discusses officer wellness, mental health after critical incidents

CNAW Newsroom —
Columbus police chief discusses officer wellness, mental health after critical incidents
Key takeaways
  • Columbus Police Chief Stoney Mathis emphasizes officer mental health support following traumatic incidents through counseling and debriefings.
  • Department employs in-house clinician and hosts community events to support officer wellness and build departmental relationships.

The physical dangers of policing are often visible, but Columbus Police Chief Stoney Mathis says the emotional toll can last far longer.

During an exclusive interview with CNAW2News.com, Mathis discussed how the department supports officers following traumatic events, including recent officer-involved shootings.

Following critical incidents, officers receive counseling before returning to work.

The department also conducts group debriefings allowing officers to openly discuss what they experienced.

“This is a tough business,” Mathis said.

He noted repeated exposure to violence can contribute to chronic post-traumatic stress and said the department now employs an in-house clinician to provide mental health services.

“I think the mental health of our police officers is just as important as the physical health,” he said.

Mathis also believes maintaining morale requires building relationships outside the workplace.

Quarterly meetings, family events and department gatherings are designed to strengthen those connections.

“These police officers are like family to me,” Mathis said.
