Columbus police launch Operation Overlook ahead of summer crime spike

CNAW Newsroom —
Columbus police launch Operation Overlook ahead of summer crime spike

With summer on the horizon and schools set to release students for break, the Columbus Police Department is launching a bold new initiative aimed at curbing the annual uptick in crime: Operation Overlook. The initiative brings together law enforcement, city officials, educators, parents, and community leaders in a unified effort to reduce crime and save lives.

This all-hands-on-deck strategy comes as Columbus sees a 26.9% reduction in crime compared to last year, with police aiming to cut that number even further. “By the end of the year, our goal is a 50% reduction in all crime,” said CPD leadership. “Columbus could become one of the **top 10 safest cities in America.”

Operation Overlook will see 109 detectives augmenting patrol missions, while a select group of undercover officers will be deployed to target high-crime areas. But this is far more than a police effort.

“This isn’t just a law enforcement initiative,” said Columbus Police Chief. “It’s a community mission. Teachers, coaches, pastors, business owners, parents — everyone is stepping up. We can’t do it alone as police, but we can do it together.”

Under the initiative, educators and coaches are asked to keep their eyes out on possible crime, parents are being encouraged to search their children’s rooms and vehicles for illegal guns and drugs, and to report findings directly to CPD, “no questions asked.”

Mayor Skip Henderson and the Columbus City Council have given full backing to the effort, stating that law enforcement visibility is a critical factor in crime prevention.

“The success of Operation Overlook,” Mayor Henderson said, “will be dictated by the public.”

With national attention on public safety, city leaders are hopeful that Columbus will become the envy of other cities in Georgia, not just for its results, but for its community-driven model.

City leaders have made their mission clear: save lives and eliminate crime.
