1 of 3

The Columbus Police Department’s hard work is not going unnoticed as they have announced a notable drop in several major crime categories.

From January 1, 2024, to October 24, 2024, murder is down by 29.7%, robbery is down by 27.2%, burglary is down by 22.7%, and theft by taking (motor vehicle) is down by 16.5%.

In addition to the reductions, the department has achieved impressive clearance rates from the beginning of the year to September 30th, outpacing national averages in multiple areas.

In murder cases, there is a 92% clearance rate, with the national average being 55.5%. In robbery cases, there is a 34.4% clearance rate, with the national average being 29.9%. There is a 30.7% clearance rate in burglary cases, with the national average being 13.2%. In theft by taking (motor vehicle) cases, there is a 66.7% clearance rate, with the national average being 10.8%.

“These numbers reflect not only a drop in crime but our relentless commitment to solving cases,” said Chief Stoney Mathis. “Our clearance rates show the hard work of our detectives, especially in cases like murder, where we’re far exceeding the national average. We’re not letting up and will continue working diligently to make Columbus even safer.”
