Combative Auburn man dies in police custody; ALEA investigating

An Auburn man, who became combative during his arrest and was tased by police, was pronounced deceased minutes after going unconscious during a medical evaluation.

The incident began when the Auburn Police Department received a complaint from the 700 block of Martin Luther King Drive of a person exhibiting erratic behavior at 2:48 P.M., on November 27, 2022. Officers responded to the area and contacted the individual, a 32-year-old male from Auburn, AL, near the 600 block of Spencer Avenue.

During the initial contact, the individual became combative with officers and subsequently a Taser was deployed. He was detained and EMS responded to conduct an assessment.

During their evaluation, the individual lost consciousness, and first responders immediately performed life-saving measures, including the administration of Narcan.

The individual was transported to the East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) Emergency Room by EMS, where life-saving measures continued. He was pronounced deceased by the attending physician at EAMC Emergency Room. Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton identified the man as Ricardo A. Gary.

In accordance to the Auburn Police Department’s protocol, this incident is being investigated by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
