Russell County, Phenix City, and Columbus law enforcement agencies partnered together to arrest two shooting, theft suspects.

The arrests came following a tip being received to the Columbus Police Department’s Fugitive Unit on May 31, 2024. The tip led them to the 2700 block of College Drive in Phenix City, AL and observed two individuals wanted in Columbus, GA on felony charges.

“After identifying the suspects, the Phenix City Police Department and Russell County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit were called in to assist. The suspects attempted to flee which initiated a vehicle pursuit,” police said. The suspects abandoned the vehicle on 10th Avenue in Phenix City and fled the scene on foot.

During the foot pursuit, Jyquarious Varner, 18, discarded a Glock handgun which was later found by Russell County Sheriff’s Office K9 Dex and his handler. In total, two firearms were recovered during the incident, one of which had been reported stolen by the Columbus Police Department.

Three individuals were taken into custody following the pursuit, including Varner and Zayvion Robinson, 18, both wanted on the same charges of Aggravated Assault, Theft by Taking, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.

“The charges stemmed from a shooting and vehicle theft that happened on March 28, 2024 at the Mystick Mart (645 Brown Avenue) in Columbus, GA,” police added. “The third suspect who was arrested following the recent pursuit is a juvenile who had no involvement in the Mystick Mart incident.”

Both suspects are awaiting extradition to Columbus, GA.
