A middle Georgia deputy was shot and killed early this morning, and the suspect in the deputy’s killing is in jail after leading police on a high-speed chase with the deputy’s cruiser, authorities say.

The ordeal began when a Crisp County Sheriff’s Deputy, later identified as 26-year-old Tyee Browne, got out with a vehicle in the middle of the roadway in the 1300 Block of HWY 280 West, Cordele, Georgia, on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, around 3:40 A.M.

Before getting out with the vehicle, Deputy Browne was made aware that the vehicle came back stolen, and the suspect was wanted in multiple armed robberies, as well as the possibility of firearms being in the vehicle. After getting out with the vehicle, Deputy Browne was shot and critically injured.

The suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Croshawn Cross, took the Deputy’s patrol car and fled the scene. Crisp County EMS transported the deputy to Crisp Regional Hospital, where the deputy later succumbed to their injuries.

”The subject led law enforcement on a pursuit through multiple Georgia counties,” Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock said. “Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested the subject on Interstate 475. They also recovered the stolen patrol unit.”

Cross has been charged with Malice Murder, Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault (two counts), Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, Carjacking, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted felon (3 counts), Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime (3 counts), & Theft by Taking (2 counts).

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation.
