Death of Manchester High School football player on 3rd Avenue under investigation

CNAW Newsroom —
Death of Manchester High School football player on 3rd Avenue under investigation

Local and state investigators are on the scene of a death investigation Sunday afternoon in the town of Manchester.

Manchester is located in Meriwether County, Georgia. The crime scene is happening on Third Avenue at Third Street.

Officials established the crime scene as an active search by family members of missing Manchester football player, Brandon Smith, is underway. Smith had been missing for a couple days but was found deceased today.

The following was released by Meriwether County School System’s superintendent Dr. Robert Griffin and Manchester High School’s principal Mrs. Suze Neal:

We are heartbroken to hear the news of the tragic and untimely death of one of our student-athletes, Brandon Smith.

Manchester High School’s celebration of playing for the Georgia 1-A State Football Championship has unfortunately turned into something none of us could have fathomed.

The circumstances behind this tragedy are still being investigated and will be shared publicly by local authorities.

We continue to pray for Brandon’s family, friends, teammates, and classmates. Manchester High School will have mental health support available starting on Monday morning.

Brandon was a loyal teammate and friend who excelled on and off the field. He will be deeply missed.

We are being told that Georgia Bureau of investigation agents are on the scene. Nelly Miles, Director of Office of Public & Governmental Affairs of GBI, says Manchester P.D asked the GBI to conduct crime scene processing only.
