A 50-year-old Smiths Station man has been convicted of distributing methamphetamine following a federal jury trial in Opelika, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama.

Kenneth Byron Halsey was found guilty on Oct. 29, 2026, of distributing 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.

According to evidence presented at trial, Halsey sold 50 grams or more of methamphetamine to two individuals at his residence in Smiths Station. Jurors were shown a video recording depicting the drug transaction during the trial.

Halsey is scheduled to face sentencing in the coming months. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, with a maximum possible sentence of life in prison.

A federal district judge will determine Halsey’s sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. There is no parole in the federal prison system.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Faith Mote and John J. Geer III prosecuted the case on behalf of the Middle District of Alabama.

The conviction follows a jury trial in federal court. Halsey’s final sentence will be determined at a later hearing.
