CNAW Newsroom —
From Virginia to Georgia: Suspect linked to $60K Troup County church email fraud case
Key takeaways
  • Virginia man Samuel Opoku arrested March 20, 2026, extradited to Georgia for $60K church email fraud scheme.
  • Opoku used spoofed emails impersonating financial advisors to trick church officials into transferring funds through fraudulent accounts.

A Virginia man is now in custody in West Georgia after investigators say he played a key role in a sophisticated email scam that targeted a local church and stole tens of thousands of dollars.

According to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, Samuel Nana Opoku, of Fairfax County, Virginia, was arrested on March 20, 2026, and faces multiple charges including money laundering, felony theft by taking, five counts of identity fraud, and initiation of deceptive commercial email.

Authorities say the case stems from a business email compromise scheme that defrauded a Troup County church of more than $60,000. Investigators determined that Opoku was part of a criminal enterprise that impersonated financial advisors connected to a legitimate financial institution. Using spoofed email accounts, the suspects allegedly tricked church officials into transferring funds into a fraudulent business account under their control.

Once the money was obtained, investigators say it was moved through a series of additional accounts created using stolen identities in an effort to conceal and distribute the funds.

Officials also discovered that the suspects used the identities of church staff members to create more deceptive email accounts, potentially targeting additional victims.

Opoku was initially arrested on November 22, 2025, in Fairfax County by Virginia State Police. He was later extradited to Troup County on March 20 to face charges in the case.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities say additional warrants have been issued for other individuals believed to be involved in the scheme.

The Troup County Sheriff’s Office credited several agencies for their assistance, including the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, Virginia State Police, Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office, and the Arlington County Police Department.

Anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to contact the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.
