Key takeaways
  • Hamilton Police Chief Eric Weiss resigns after 5+ years to pursue new career opportunity.
  • Weiss credits department accomplishments to officers, city employees, officials, and community partners' collective work.

Hamilton Police Chief Eric Weiss has announced that he will be stepping down from his position after more than five and a half years leading the Hamilton Police Department.

Weiss made the announcement in a letter dated October 6, 2026, saying he is leaving the position to accept a new opportunity and begin the next chapter of his career.

“After more than five and a half years of having the honor and privilege of serving as Chief of Police for the City of Hamilton, I will be stepping down from my position to accept a new opportunity and begin the next chapter of my career,” Weiss wrote.

Weiss said serving as chief has been one of the greatest honors of his professional career and thanked the City of Hamilton, its residents, the community and those who supported him and the department during his tenure.

“When I became Chief, my goal was simple: serve this community with integrity, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to making a positive difference,” Weiss said. “I believe one of the greatest things any leader can hope for is to leave an organization and a community better than they found it.”

Looking back on his time with the department, Weiss credited the accomplishments of the Hamilton Police Department to the work of officers, city employees, elected officials, community partners and residents.

“Anything we achieved during my time in Hamilton was never the work of one person,” Weiss wrote. “It was the result of dedicated officers, city employees, elected officials, community partners, and citizens who believed in what we were trying to accomplish.” Weiss described his departure as “bittersweet,” saying Hamilton, the police department and the people he served will always hold a special place in his heart.

“I leave with tremendous gratitude for the trust that was placed in me and with pride in what our team accomplished together,” Weiss said.

Weiss did not announce details about his new opportunity or identify who will succeed him as Hamilton police chief.

“I wish the City of Hamilton, the Hamilton Police Department, and this entire community nothing but continued success in the years ahead,” Weiss wrote.

He concluded his letter by thanking the community for allowing him the privilege of serving as chief.
