UPDATE: Debby Becomes a Hurricane as it Approaches the Northeastern Gulf Coast. More at hurricanes.gov.

Original story: All eyes are on the Southeast as Tropical Storm Debby, soon to be Hurricane Debby, arrives on the Florida panhandle coast.

As heavy rainfall continues to batter the southeastern United States, significant flooding impacts are anticipated from the Florida Big Bend region through southeast Georgia and the Coastal Plain of the Carolinas through Friday. National Weather Service meteorologists are warning of potentially historic heavy rainfall across southeast Georgia and South Carolina, which could lead to catastrophic flooding in some areas. “Additionally, significant river flooding is expected, further exacerbating the situation,” according to the NWS.

Residents along the Gulf Coast of Florida are facing a life-threatening storm surge, with water levels expected to rise 6 to 10 feet above ground level between the Ochlockonee River and Suwannee River on Monday. Authorities urge residents in the Storm Surge Warning area to heed local officials’ advice and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

Hurricane conditions are forecasted to hit the Florida Big Bend region on Monday, with a Hurricane Warning in effect. Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin this evening and persist through Monday farther south, affecting Florida’s west coast, including the Tampa Bay area.

As the storm progresses, impacts from storm surge and strong winds are also possible along the southeast coast from Georgia to North Carolina through the middle of the week. Storm surge watches and tropical storm watches have been issued for portions of these areas, with additional watches and warnings likely to be required later today.

Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and follow any guidance provided by local authorities to stay safe during this severe weather event.
