A male inmate has died following a medical episode at the Troup County Jail.

The male inmate was located by the Troup County Sheriff’s Office jail and medical staff around 2:42 a.m. on April 11, 2026.

The male inmate was determined to be unresponsive and personnel began lifesaving measures, including CPR and the use of an AED.

The Troup County Fire Department and AMR arrived on scene and transported the inmate, identified as George Ellis, 70, to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center. Ellis died at the hospital.

“A cause of death is unknown until the completion of an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who is also doing their own independent investigation,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
