According to officials, at approximately 12:30 p.m. on May 9, detention officers discovered the inmate, identified as 56-year-old Raymond Wardlaw, hanging by a bed sheet inside his cell. Jail staff, including medical personnel, immediately responded and began life-saving measures.

Emergency responders from the Troup County Fire Department and AMR arrived shortly after and continued resuscitation efforts. Wardlaw was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, where he is currently receiving critical care.
