Interstate crash leaves one female dead, Opelika police confirm

CNAW Newsroom —
Interstate crash leaves one female dead, Opelika police confirm

A late-night crash on Interstate 85 South has left one person dead and prompted an investigation by the Opelika Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit.

On Monday, August 12, at approximately 11:39 p.m., Opelika Police responded to reports of a multi-vehicle collision with injuries near exit 57 on I-85 South. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two passenger vehicles and a semi truck involved in the crash.

According to police, the incident began when a Honda passenger car struck a metal mattress spring that was lying in the roadway. The impact caused the spring to spark, prompting the Honda’s driver to exit the vehicle in an attempt to remove the debris.

While the driver of the Honda was addressing the hazard, a semi truck came to a stop behind the vehicle. Moments later, a Kia SUV collided with the rear of the semi truck.

The driver of the Kia, a 28-year-old female, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

The Opelika Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information related to the crash is urged to contact the Opelika Police Department.
