  • Lee County NAACP urges community members, officials, and leaders to unite against youth violence at meeting.

The Lee County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has issued a statement following the tragic shooting of an Opelika teen at an alumni event this weekend.

The shooting took place around 8:30 P.M. on June 7, 2025, near the Opelika Alumni Day celebration at Bandy Park. 16-year-old Jamiyah Grant was shot following an argument between a group of individuals. The cause of the argument remains unknown. After being struck by gunfire, Jamiyah attempted to drive away but collided with another vehicle. Despite multiple resuscitation efforts, she later died at a nearby hospital.

A suspect, 18 years of age, was arrested hours later by detectives.

Lee County NAACP said in a statement:

This senseless violence must stop—and it starts and ends with us: the friends, families, and community that surround our youth. Our children matter.

So, we ask: Who is willing to come together—as a collective—to meet with our young people and those who love them? Who will show up to listen, to understand, and to act?

MEN, WE NEED YOU. MINISTERS, WE NEED YOU. COACHES, WE NEED YOU. TEACHERS, COUNSELORS, SCHOOL STAFF—WE NEED YOU. ELECTED OFFICIALS, WE NEED YOU. LAW ENFORCEMENT, WE NEED YOU.

Bottom line: we need all of you.

No single person or organization can solve this alone. We repeat: No ONE group can save our community. It takes all of us. It takes a village.

Text us. Call us. Let us know you’re in. We may not have all the details or answers yet—but we know this: something must be done, and it’s up to US to do it.

The Lee County NAACP has invited the public to a community liaison meeting on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 5:30 P.M. in the Municipal Court House.
