CNAW Newsroom —
Man arrested after burglarizing two storage units in Smiths Station

Lee County investigators arrested a Phenix City man who burglarized two storage units in Smiths Station, authorities say.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said they received a report of two storage units in the 9000 block of Lee Road 246 being burglarized on March 14, 2026. The storage units were rented by a non-profit organization and property valued at $2,100.00 was removed.

Two days later, investigators developed a suspect and a possible location of the stolen property after reviewing surveillance video.

Investigators conducted a search warrant at the residence of 37-year-old Stephen Michael Hammock Jr. in the 100 block of Lee Road 977.

Multiple items of stolen property were recovered in Stephen Hammock Jr.’s residence.

“Investigators also conducted a search warrant at a storage unit in the 9000 Block of Lee Road 246 and recovered additional stolen property,” investigators said. “The recovered property was returned to the non-profit organization.”

Stephen Hammock Jr. was charged with two counts of Burglary 3rd Degree and one count of Theft of Property 2nd Degree. He is being held in the Lee County Detention Center on a $9000.00 bond.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 334-749-5651 or Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at 334-215-STOP (7867).
