Man arrested for terrorist threats after standoff overnight in Troup County

CNAW Newsroom —
Man arrested for terrorist threats after standoff overnight in Troup County

A Troup County man is in jail Monday morning after an overnight standoff during a welfare check call.

Troup County 911 received a phone call from an individual requesting a “Welfare Check” on his brother, Michael Cornelison, 51 years of age, who lived in the 200 block of Thomas Drive on August 6th at 11:25 PM. “The brother told dispatchers that Michael had sent him a concerning text message that eluded to harming himself,” authorities said.

Deputies were able to make contact with Michael’s wife who was inside the home with several family members and friends and she was able to provide to the deputies that Michael had threatened to harm himself and her along with making threats to harm any law enforcement officer that may approach the home.

“The wife was also able to inform deputies that there were numerous guns inside the home. While deputies were responding to the location and arriving, all the occupants were able to safely exit the home and were extracted to a safe location to meet with investigators to gather information on Michael and the potential weapons,” they added.

Due to the concern for Michael’s safety, neighboring residence and law enforcement, notification was made to the Georgia State Patrol SWAT team to respond to the location along with a Drone from LaGrange Police Department. Several members of the Georgia Department of Public Safety SWAT team and Crisis Negotiators arrived on scene and at 6:13 AM, Michael peacefully exited his home and was taken into custody by members of the SWAT team and custody was transferred to deputies with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael was transported to the Troup County Jail and is being charged with Terrorist Threats (Family Violence Act – Felony).
