A Montgomery man has been formally arrested on felony charges of murder and first-degree robbery following a months-long investigation into a deadly shooting that occurred earlier this year in Auburn.

Mardrekus Ja Quan Lee, 23, was taken into custody Thursday by Auburn Police with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service Gulf Coast Regional Task Force.

The arrest is connected to a February 15 incident in which Auburn Police responded to reports of gunfire near the 4300 block of Golf Club Drive. Officers arrived to find a 33-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders provided medical aid and transported the victim by ambulance. He remained hospitalized for over a month before succumbing to his injuries in late March.

“Preliminary findings from the investigation indicated that the suspect and victim were known to one another, and the incident did not appear to be random,” authorities said.

Following an extensive investigation, police identified Lee as a suspect. Arrest warrants for murder and first-degree robbery were issued. On May 2, 2025, members of the U.S. Marshals Service located Lee in Montgomery and arrested him in connection with the case.

At the time of his arrest, Lee was held at the Mac Sim Butler Detention Facility in Montgomery on unrelated charges. Upon becoming eligible for transport, he was transferred to the Lee County Jail on August 28, where Auburn Police executed the outstanding arrest warrants.

Lee remains in custody without bond.
