The Hogansville Police Department and Troup County 911 received calls for a structure fire on Church Street on Saturday, December 15, 2023 at approximately 6:50 P.M.

Officers arrived on scene approximately one to two minutes later with Troup County Fire Station 11 and found a single story structure and a passenger van adjacent to the house on fire with heavy flames engulfing a large portion of the house. Officers attempted to make entry in an attempt to rescue the individual reported to be trapped inside but were forced back by the heat and smoke. The Fire Department immediately began an aggressive attack on the fire. This was a rapidly spreading fire and took over an hour to gain control. TCFD St 11, 1, 2, 6 and 14 along with 4 F.D. staff personnel were deployed to fight the fire. Fire crews conducted several interior searches during the process where possible. Due to hazards from the fire and large obstacles Inside the structure, search efforts were hampered. Upon gaining total control, firefighters began conducting a more thorough search of the house. During the search, the body of a male subject believed to be the resident of the home, was found in what was believed to be the bedroom.

The Troup County Coroner, and State Fire Marshal’s Office were called in to assist the Troup County Fire Marshal to investigate the origin and cause of the fire as well as the fatality related to the fire. At this time no positive identification has been made. The investigation lasted into the early hours of Sunday morning. The victim was taken into custody by the Troup County Coroner’s Office and will be sent to the GBI for identification and an autopsy.
