Lee County deputies are investigating an assault involving shots fired in the city of Smiths Station overnight.

Deputies, along with EAMC ETS, and Smiths Station Fire and a Rescue were called out to shots fired and an unresponsive male on a dirt road off of Lee Road 430 near the 15000 block of U.S. Highway 280 East, just a few feet from the city’s Fire Station 1, around 12:19 A.M. on Friday, June 7, 2024.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones says officials discovered a 40-year-old victim who was not shot, but suffering from being struck in head with handgun until he was unconscious. He also appeared to have minor cuts and bruises around the face, neck and head area. The victim was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown Campus in critical condition.

Witnesses on the scene advised that the victim and his uncle by marriage, 46-year-old Jamey Scott Dillard from Smiths Station were in an argument when a firearm was brandished and led to the victim being pistol whipped, according to officials.

Dillard was transported to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office where he was arrested and charged with Assault in the First Degree. He is being held in the Lee County Jail on a $50,000.00 bond.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 334-749-5651 or Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at 334-215-STOP (7867).
