Opelika firefighter medic deceased after overnight crash on Lee Road 188, authorities say

CNAW Newsroom —
Opelika firefighter medic deceased after overnight crash on Lee Road 188, authorities say

A single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning has left a Lafayette man, who is also an Opelika firefighter medic, deceased.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the crash occurred at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday, July, 29, 2023.

“27-year-old Zachary J. Sorenson was fatally injured when the 2001 Toyota Tacoma that he was driving left the roadway and overturned,” ALEA said. “Sorenson was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash, was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The crash occurred on Lee County 188, approximately nine miles west of Auburn, in Lee County. Opelika Fire Department announced on social media: “It is with our deepest sympathies we report the passing of Firefighter Medic Zachary “Bubba” Sorenson. Bubba set the standard for our department. He was courageous, loyal and passionate about firefighting and the Opelika community.“

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate. Please keep his family, friends, coworkers, and everyone who knew him in your thoughts and prayers.
