Colin Scroggins —
Opelika firefighters deploying south ahead of Hurricane Isaias
Key takeaways
  • Three Opelika firefighters deployed south to staging area to prepare for potential Hurricane Isaias response.
  • Strike Team 111, comprising seven Alabama fire departments, positioned to rapidly respond if storm impacts require assistance.

Three members of the Opelika Fire Department are heading south this morning as Alabama fire crews prepare for potential deployment in response to Hurricane Isaias.

According to the Opelika Fire Department, Lt. Cody Farr, Cpt. Blake Smith and Sgt. Jason Melendy are traveling to a designated staging area closer to the Gulf Coast. Once there, they will meet with the other members of Strike Team 111 and prepare for possible deployment as the hurricane approaches landfall.

Strike Team 111 is part of a coordinated statewide mutual aid effort organized through the Alabama Association of Fire Chiefs Mutual Aid Consortium. Fire crews and emergency response resources from multiple Alabama agencies are being positioned farther south so they can respond quickly if the storm’s impacts require additional assistance.

The strike team includes Chelsea Fire & Rescue, Auburn Fire, Opelika Fire Department, Morris Fire, Irondale Fire, Pelham Fire Department and the Cahaba Valley Fire and EMR District. The team will include fire engines, a battalion chief and an advanced life support transport unit.

The Opelika Fire Department is asking the community to keep those who may be affected by Hurricane Isaias, along with the first responders preparing to assist, in their thoughts and prayers.

CNAW2News.com will continue to follow developments as Hurricane Isaias approaches the Gulf Coast.
