CNAW Newsroom —
Opelika Police arrest suspect in attempted murder case following weekend shooting
1 of 2

A man wanted in connection with a weekend shooting has been arrested by authorities, according to the Opelika Police Department.

Officers from the Opelika Police Department, assisted by the Lee County SWAT Team, executed a search warrant at a residence in the 1400 block of Crawford Road, on Monday, July 21, 2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m. During the warrant, 28-year-old Mykiel Sanchez Holmes was taken into custody on a warrant for Attempted Murder.

The charge stems from a shooting that occurred the previous day, Sunday, July 20, at the Grub Mart convenience store. Investigators say Holmes shot a 31-year-old man with whom he had a prior altercation. Police confirmed that the two men were acquaintances and had a history of conflict.

The victim was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, Georgia, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Following his arrest, Holmes was booked into the Lee County Jail. The Opelika Police Department is investigating the case. If you have any details related to this incident, please contact the Opelika Police Detective Division at (334) 705-5220 or the Secret Witness Hotline at (334) 745-8665.
